Hey All - I was unable to make the tryouts, but am on the free agent list and would love to get on a team this season. I consider myself a D level player, though have played in C league before. Please contact me at your earliest convenience should you have an opening. Thanks!

When does the winter league start? Do your teams stay together and play that league? I am looking to get on a team. This is my first year and I do not know the process. I currently do the beginner hockey clinics in Oakland, but I would like to play in San Francisco because my son plays youth hockey there. Any information you can provide me would be greatly appreciated.

Victor plays on the Goaldiggers (as do I). Its unfortunate but his sentiment of wanting to play elsewhere resonates with the rest of the team as well. It seems that D division isn't the beginner division at all, but rather the division of experienced players that happens to play Thursday nights. While I had heard that before organizing a team of what I knew would be mostly beginners, I didn't realize it would be so pronounced. Thank God for 2-3 good players we do have or I know I would have felt like giving up weeks ago. I don't know how you resolve this and although we always have the attitude of going out to play and have fun, getting shellacked every game gets old. Unfortunately I don't know that we could put up with it for another season.

Actually, that's only partially true. The Oakland center has 2 rinks, one is under renovation, while the other is operational and leagues are running. The SJ Sharks deal has fallen through. The city or perhaps another private firm (Icoplex?) manages the rink.

Victor,

The Oakland Ice Center is closed for renovations. The SJ Sharks have purchased it and are going to remodel it and hopefully open again in the fall.

Victor, the nearest other rinks are in oakland or belmont. I think belmonts next league starts soon. Good luck.
Sharks 10, I agree that you have to take a look at the whole team, the point isn't to punish teams who win, the point is to keep the league competitive. That's why I said that it should only apply to teams that win over 75% of their games. Then I agree that the stats of the players on the team should be taken into account. Depending on those stats one could remove one or two players. By the way only one team in the ringer-fest that is this season fits into this category so far.
I also agree with you that we should play our asses off every game, and not let the roster stuff interfere. When I'm playing I don't (except to key on a couple of the opposing ringers), but off the ice I have no problem discussing, or even argueing fairly heatedly, about how to improve the league.
One more word about the Goaldiggers, they were quite possibly the most sportsmanlike team we have played this season. Even when the game was obviously out of reach they never quit working, and they never got chippy, or started whining. That's rare in any league.

Is there another rink around here with adult
leagues where I can play ice hockey?

Beating a last place team badly happens to new teams sometimes... even our team was in the same situation when we first got into this league. but as you play and get experience, you eventually get better. making an exception for a couple of teams, I remember a lot of the teams in this league go through this same phase, but now they are all pretty good teams. even our team now hovers at the .500 mark or a game or two above sometimes...
as for your idea of having the top 2 players move down, it would only work if you evaluate their complete team. take the top 2 scorers in the league right now... if you see the rest of their team stats, not anyone is really close in comparison... and their records are all near middle of the pack.. but when you have a team that has 4-5 scorers on the scoring list, then you know something's up... but like I said before, if teams want to do that, so be it... just get your team motivated to try and kick ass. it's like the warriors beating dallas, just got to play and make it happen.

Sharks 10 makes a good point about convienience. If a player or team makes that argument though, (which should be taken into consideration) then instead of graduating the top two players up a level, they should be moved to the last place teams.
My team played the last place team last night, and I didn't see anyone that I would really call a ringer, they had two or three pretty good players, but maybe my idea of a ringer is different than sharks 10's idea of a ringer.
I thought that the goaldiggers was the only team that we have played this season that really looked like a "D" team.
They had a couple of good players and several beginners. What's rediculus is that we beat them 14-0. That is bad; it made me realize how loaded my team is for a "D" team, but we're only a couple of games above 500, and will probably finish in 3rd or 4th place. It's just crazy.

Ice Hounds need to move up. Full of ringers who like to play in a league much lower than their abilities.

1 or 2 ringers is fine. Half a team is not.

first off, there isn't a team in the league that doesn't have at least one 'ringer' player... even the last place team does. so to complain about it really doesn't do much. I agree some teams are stacked with better talented players, but what can you do? it should just make you want to go and play that much harder against them. if you say players/teams have to move up, it's hard because some play thursday nights just because it may be more convenient to them than other days. The best you can do is try to have a repeat champion in the league move up... it makes no sense trying to win 4 championships in the 'D' league. but there again they might face the convenience issue... if there's any complain to be made, it should be with a team that has players dominating the scoring list... if half of that list is occupied with players from one team, then there might be an issue with a team being too dominant. But personally for me, that just makes me want to beat them even more.

as for the person who got kicked off their team for ringer players, that doesn't have anything to do with the rest of the league and their ringer players, as it does with your team being messed up in treating you that way.

Kicking people off your team to load it up with ringers in D league is pathetic. Whichever team did that (coughicehoundscough) is just messed up. Can we say poor-sports. As to the ringer situation in general, I doubt that the league can get rid all of them. However, teams that win more than 75% of their games should either be forced to either graduate their top 1-2 players, or if they prefer, the entire team up one level. I like winning, and I don't even mind losing half of our games, that's what cometition is all about, but this season is crazy. One team has only lost one game, and one team has only won one game, that doesn't seem like a competitive league. Why even have different divisions if the league isn't going to try to keep each level competitive.
