Description
Thank you for registering to try out for the Highlanders program.

Please see below for important information about the tryout process and program, including new policies for 2017:

Parent Information Meeting: We will hold a parent information meeting on Tuesday January 10th at 7:30 p.m. at the Piedmont Community Center. Each child who tries out for Highlanders must have at least one parent in attendance at this pre-tryout informational meeting to review policies and expectations in the Highlanders programs, including changes new this year.

Selection process: Within 72 hours after tryouts are completed, we will make calls to those who are selected into the program. After receiving a call, players will have 48 hours to accept the slot, register for the program, and remit the non-refundable registration fee (full fee or first installment). Players who do not accept their slot, register and remit payment within 48 hours after acceptance onto the team will be deemed to have declined their slot, and the spot will be offered to the next player on the list. As soon as all spots are confirmed, players who did not make a team will be contacted.

Team formation: Beginning in 2017, all Highlanders teams will have a professional head coach with a parent volunteer coach. Players will be accepted into a "pool" of Highlanders players without distinguishing between Purple and White teams. The decision about purple versus white team for spring season will be made after the first several weeks of spring practice. The decision about purple versus white team for fall season will be made before the beginning of the fall season. Players may be moved between teams before the beginning of the fall season. PSC and 24/7 reserve the right to decide, with input from 24/7, whether to form 1, 2 or 3 teams at an age group, the league in which each team should participate, and the flighting of each team.

Team requirements: All teams are required to have a parent volunteer coach, a team manager, and at least one affiliated referee in order to begin practicing. Teams that do not have all three positions filled will not be permitted to begin practicing.

Referee training: A referee training course will be offered in Piedmont February 3-5, 2017 (Friday night, all day Saturday, and half day Sunday, finishing up in time for you to watch the Super Bowl that afternoon.) We strongly encourage you to participate in this licensing course and become your team's affiliated referee. Teams can and should have more than one affiliated referee. Every team has a designated number of "referee credits" that must be satisfied during the season (a ref credit is a game refereed). Teams that do not earn enough "ref credits" during the season will be assessed a fine, which will be funded by the volunteer deposit described below, such that all volunteer deposits for the team will be forfeited.

Volunteer requirements: Piedmont Soccer Club is a volunteer-run organization for our community serving approximately 1300 players. New in 2017, all players will be required to pay a refundable $75 volunteer deposit at the time of registration. This deposit is refundable only to those families who have fulfilled their volunteer obligations and request a refund of their volunteer deposit at the end of the season. Volunteer obligations may be fulfilled by serving as parent volunteer coach, team manager, affiliated referee, or member of the Board of Piedmont Soccer Club, or by assisting the club with special events or activities as requested. Irrespective of the above, volunteer donations are nonrefundable to players on a team that incurs league fines for failing to earn enough "referee credits."

Playing time policy: PSC's playing time policy states that all Highlanders players in good standing shall play at least 50% of each game. As this is a competitive league, players are not guaranteed equal playing time; however, every player who attends all practices should expect to play a minimum of 50% of each game.

2017-2018 seasons: U.S. soccer will be changing the "soccer year" from calendar year to school year, beginning in 2018. In the past, Highlanders tryouts have been held in late January or early February. Beginning in 2018, tryouts will be held in May. The transition will be as follows: players who are accepted into a Highlanders team in spring 2017 will be guaranteed a place on a Highlanders team through the end of spring 2018. Players will be asked to register for a full year in 2017, as usual, and will be asked to register for a short year (one season) in early 2018.

Spring season policy: PSC recognizes that some players participate in multiple sports during the year, with soccer as the primary sport in the fall and baseball/softball/lacrosse/other primary sport in the spring. As such, PSC provides two training sessions a week in the spring but understands that some players may only be able to attend one session a week due to other spring commitments. It is also understood that some players may have limited availability to play games in the spring season due to conflicts with other sports. PSC expects all Highlanders players to make soccer their first priority sport in the fall.

State Cup and tournament policy: Team registration fees do not include the costs of registering for State Cup or tournaments. These additional expenses shall be decided on a team-by-team basis and shall be collected to team treasurer or team manager.

Game forfeiture policy: Teams are required to submit request for game cancellation (if needed) at least 96 hours before game time. If a game is cancelled within 96 hours of game time, the team is responsible for payment of all fines associated with late cancellation or forfeiture. All players are expected to update their availability on TeamSnap so that team managers can determine in advance of the 96-hour deadline if a game must be rescheduled.

Uniform policy: New in 2017, all teams are required to have both home (purple) and away (white) uniforms. Note that we will have new Adidas uniforms in 2017 that will be good for three years.

Positive Coaching Alliance Policy: PSC subscribes to the philosophy of the Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA), www.positivecoach.org. PSC sponsors a PCA meeting for coaches and parents each year. Every Highlanders parent is encouraged to attend the 2017 PCA meeting to learn about the power of positive. Beginning in 2018, we will require that at least one parent for every player attend a PCA workshop.
Summer Training and Summer Camp: Evening summer training led by Pro Coaches will take place in July and early August (at no additional cost). Week-long summer camps (3 hours per day for 5 days, Monday thru Friday, no additional cost) will take place at the end of summer. Dates, times and locations are to be announced. Players are expected to attend summer training and summer camp.

Thank you for your interest in the PSC Highlanders program. We look forward to seeing you at tryouts.
