A great game between two very good teams...the way playoff lacrosse should be! Garfield is certainly one of the top 4 teams in Division II and it was unfortunate this match-up occurred so early in the playoffs.
Issaquah struck first as Craigh Cornelius found a wide open Andrew Morris on the crease and the sophomore middie finished the biggest goal of his career. Then Issaquah proceeded to play a very uninspired quarter and a half. Jon Matusiefsky worked hard, but Garfield doubled well and Issaquah stood around content to watch him get stripped.
Meanwhile, Drew Snider did his usual and reeked havoc on the offensive end for Garfield. Issaquah tried to make some defensive adjustments, but Garfield moved the ball well and Snider kept creating. Bulldogs would score 3 unanswered to go up 3-1 at half.
Issaquah came out a bit more intense in the 2nd half and played a very good 3rd quarter, scoring once on a scramble situation on the crease and keeping Garfield scoreless. Garfield failed to hit an open net on a failed Issaquah clear, but still led 3-2 headed to the 4th.
Garfield scored first in the 4th as Snider picked up an errant pass and fired home a bounce shot. Snider's 3rd of the day had put Garfield back up two with just about 10 minutes left in the game.
Issaquah wasn't ready to be finished and went on a tear for the next 5 minutes. Craigh Cornelius got it started dodging from the top and found a cutting David Campi. Campi turned and finished a quick little jump shot. A few minutes later, Matusiefsky found Nick Tirney cutting from the top. Tierney split two defenders on the cut, caught and ripped a sidearm shot low that found the net...tie game!
Minutes later teams fought for the ball near midfield. Tierney cleared the man and in process set himself free for the grounball and a fast break. Tierney looked off the point and fed a cutting Campi low for almost an identical looking goal...5-4 Issaquah!
The drama was far from over. Garfield had a 3 on 1 opportunity, but Tyler Scwarz hit the side of the net. Issaquah took a silly unsportsmanlike penalty after being awarded possession, giving Garfield a man-up with about 4 minutes left. Mason Smith was able to knock down a pass though and Issaquah killed it off. Issaquah got the clock down to under 1:30, but failed to keep it in the box. Garfield would have one last possession, but Garret Johnson came up with a big save and Issaquah kicked the ball towards midfield on the ensuing scramble.
Issaquah did just enough to survive! Great Game!
