Great clash of titans to end the season and it came down to the wire. Issaquah got off to a dream start, finishing early and often. Jake Director ripped the top shelf just a minute and a half in for Issaquah. Mercer tied it three minutes later as Steven Taylor curled from X unintruded.

After the 1-1 tie, most of the first half belonged to the purple and gold. Goldstein put a swim move on Bruckner and torched the bottom corner with a lefty bullet. Then Director again sweeping to his left on Beckwith. Followed by Fritz with a tidy little lefty inside roll to dunk it over Giraud.

Just a minute into the 2nd a scramble ensued near midfield. Michael Mezs backhand flipped the ball right across the line to Justin Pennington who pushed the other way and found Goldstein at the left point. As a defender game, Goldstein whipped a perfect behind the back pass to a cutting Fritz who finished and sent the crowd into a frenzy! But Mercer quickly pulled one back as Matt Shields found Doug Mahony down low. Then Issaquah again... this time Goldstein came off a high pick and Pennington found him neatly cutting to the doorstep. Mahony's turn again... this one a 14 yard lefty rip, man-up. Goldstein finished another solo effort beating Raffety up high left and curling inside... no slide, so he had time to switch hands and finish side net, off hip. Issaquah's final goal of the half came as Tyler Lucas cleared and pushed down the sideline. Fritz cut back door, Lucas found him and Fritz finished again.

Mercer actually got the last of the half with just 18 seconds in the half as Issaquah was caught overrotating man-down and John Wettack was able to sidestep and make them pay. But a storybook half for Issaquah as Goldstein and Fritz each already tallied hat-tricks. Mercer's defense couldn't decide what to do with Issaquah's dodgers and the Islander offense lacked some rhythm without Daniel Shields.

On the first face-off of the 2nd half, Issaquah's Riley Goodman was jammed awkwardly into the turf and left with what was later determined to be a broken collarbone. Both teams looked tired and the 3rd quarter became a stalemate. However, Mercer would again score at the end of a quarter, this time with only 12 seconds left. Steve Caditz made the most of a scramble played and finished lefty on the run from deep. Mercer had life having narrowed the gap to 3 and having kept Issaquah scoreless for the quarter.

Didn't take too long for Issaquah to get back on track though. Connor McCalin won a scramble in the midfield and after collecting the gb moved it to Fritz just before the defender could close. Fritz had a free run to the goal. He head faked just enough to get Giraud to drop his stick from the top corner and he pinged it. Less then a minute later, Goldstein added his fourth as well... another solo effort in which he was able to tuck past the aggressive defender and make Mercer pay for no slide. These two goals were huge... pushing the lead back to five and proving the difference in the end.

Issaquah had been in control for 40 minutes, but 8 minutes is a long time in lacrosse and the storybook start almost came crashing down with a mightmare 8 minutes... predictably, Mercer mounted a comeback. Michael Black got the first as two confused defenders both stepped away from him, so he simply stepped in and ripped it. A minute later Spencer Tierney pushed a slow developing break, but a confused defensive slide package allowed Black to step up and rip it again. Mercer was back to within three with over 6 minutes left.

Issaquah settled down and seemed to have fought off Mercer's short bit of energy and had a golden opportunity to ice it, but Jake Director's shot on the doorstep was stuffed by Hap Giraud and Mercer pushed the other way. A poor substitution on the fly from Issaquah left Raffety open in the middle and he pushed an easy break. Issaquah bailed up field much too early and 3 simple passes ended with Matt Shields to Connor Bernal to cut the lead to 10-8 with 3 minutes to play.

The last 3 minutes saw a ton of scrambles. Danforth made a huge save for Issaquah but Mercer rode hard on the clear and won it back... only to have Issaquah stiffen and force the Islanders into a failure to advance. Issaquah's ball at midfield with under a minute. Beckwith immediately stripped Powers and pushed it himself, he dodged a pole and rifled a shot into Danforth's facemask... Mercer won the rebound and eventually the ball went back to Beckwith who turned and found Matt Shields open on the crease for a relatively simple catch and finish with 10 seconds to play.

On the ensuing faceoff, McClain and Brucker stood each other up and somehow McClain was called for a hold. Caditz picked up the ball with 7 seconds left and immediately rushed to cage with McClain defending. Caditz appeared to simply lose balance trying hard to dodge through McClain's check and stumbled forward, but a flag was thrown with 1 second left on the clock. Dough Mahony took the ball on the wing for Mercer... whistle blew and Mahony took at least 2 solid strides before unleashing a lefty bouncer... the longest 1 second of the year... but Danforth made the save as the horn sounded and the party was on! Issaquah repeated as champs!
