Playoff Loss (5 - 6) at Monarchs  View

Location: OAB-2
League Summary:
The Rainiers were rolling - just 3 days earlier they had won their 7th straight by defeating the Monarchs and winning the playoffs. The Monarchs hoped to return to the level of play that saw them win 8 in a row and clinch the regular season. Each team knew they would have to bring their 'A' game if they were to become the NOLL Champions.

From the start the Monarchs looked sharp. Pitcher Alex R. retired the side with a strike out and by fielding 2 sharp choppers. Later, Monarchs RBI king Phil H. knocked Alex home and the Monarchs were up 1-0.

Rainiers slugger Ari P. promptly slammed a ball to the opposite field and the game was tied at 1-1, but the Monarchs stayed poised and got out of the inning.

The Monarchs went ahead 4 -1 thanks mostly to smart, speedy baserunning and a key double by Cooper H. The Rainiers roared back and the game was tied 4-4 in the fourth. The fifth was key as the Rainiers rallied, but stiff Monarchs defense (featuring a pickoff at 3rd) and a key strikeout from Kai H. limited the damage to just one run.

Hard throwing Vincent B., who had repeatedly shut down the Monarchs, quickly recorded two outs. Phil H., under pressure, managed to slap a single and then steal second. Alex L. hit a gorgeous single, driving Phil home and tying the game for the third time. Alex L. stole third and 2 pitches later managed to slide under the tag at the plate to put the Monarchs in the lead, 5-4.

Kai notched a strikeout, Peter W. caught a high pop to shallow right, and then the game ended with a routine grounder to the mound for the third out.

These two evenly matched teams played a tight game and the mutual respect was apparent to all. The Monarchs advance to the Tournament of Champions and will play their first game (in Alameda) against Antioch on June 25.
