Predator Playoffs begin!

Wow! What a night! Finding the place was like finding your keys. You know they're in the house but good luck finding them! Finally, after rounding another industrial building, there it was, "The Box". After knocking the umpteenth ticket scalper to the ground, I made my way into the rink just in time to see the 10u championship game get underway. Talk about excitement! The night started and ended with terrific hockey.

Unbelievable goaltending from both sides left the first period of the 10u game at a 0-0 tie! Tension was building and you could feel the excitement in the air. The blue team seemed to have the upper hand and I turned away to sign autographs for a few minutes and whammo!, the purple team was up 3-1! The game ended with the purple team hanging on desperately to a one-goal victory. Those little fellas have some serious hockey in them, I was impressed!

Then came the main event, the 13u championship, and keeping in step with previous weeks, controversy was about once again. The Blues were short players, very short! They had a goalie and 4 skaters! Luckily for them, their four skaters were some darn good players. No subs meant fatigue but it also meant ... no subs. The Blues lit up the light first and the Predators quickly responded with one of their own. Like a heavyweight fight, the teams struck at each other non-stop. The goal posts of both teams were making that familiar clang followed by loud roars or sighs depending on who the parent/fan was rooting for.

As the game entered the 3rd period it looked like the Predators had gained control of game, going ahead 5-2 but then it hit! A second wind swept across the Blues and one last final push gave them two quick goals bringing the score to 5-4. The game ended with tremendous defense and numerous pucks clanging against the posts of the Predators net. The horn sounded and everyone knew the score because everyone was watching as the seconds ticked away. The Predators walked away tonight division champs and Stanley Cup champs but it came down to the last seconds of the game!

The unsung hero of the Blues this night was their replacement goalie. Shot after shot slammed into his stick, blocker pad and chest and still he hung in and did a tremendous job!

I already miss these little guys as I stand outside and watch the crowds drive away. Some great moments and great memories were made tonight and as I put my notebook on the seat next to me, I can't wait to get started again!

Sunday isn't the ticket :( Drizzle drizzle drizzle. Poop! Can I say that? It looks like the league is moving indoors and out of town for this one! Yep, that's right folks! FCRHL 10u and 13u Championships will be held Thursday night Dec. 13th at "The Box" in Chantilly, VA. Scheduling problems abound but the show must go on as they say. Rumors of injuries are also starting to filter through the hockey community but I have been unable to acquire two reliable sources, so being the legit reporter that I am, I cannot report these rumors at this time.

Dateline Dec. 8:

Valiant efforts from 10u coaches and parents helped get things rolling this morning as the leftover snow was pushed off the surface of the rink and they stood and watched, hoping against hope that somehow that rink would dry in time to get these championship games in. Mother nature even decided to help out as the sun broke through around 11:30 to help the drying process but sadly, the decision was made to postpone once again. There wasn't a dry eye in the stands at 3:00 p.m. when the word was officially announced. (ok noone was in the stands, they already knew)
One more day! Sunday! That's the ticket!

Well horsehockey! There they were, standing patiently as the 17u division finished up their award ceremony and then it hit! Ok, it drizzled, but for that rink, if you get any kind of moisture on the rink it looks like the kids are skating on oil. No 13u hockey today :( The final has been rescheduled for this upcoming Saturday at 3:00 p.m. Let's hope the weather gives us one more good day for hockey.

Dateline Dec. 2:

Here it is Sunday morning, the day of the FCRHL finals! Cloudy skies and a chance of rain/snow puts this game in question but as of noon, the rink is still dry and ready to go. The Predators played a great game yesterday and managed an 8-0 victory over the Gators. Today's game will be a tough fought game with their head-to-record at 2-1-1 in favor of the Predators. Still not verified by Coach Wolfe but the rumor still exists that one of their players is under the weather. It was hard to find anyone on the Predators that looked under the weather yesterday, so we'll just have to wait and see. Expect a battle today at the Rec. Center!!

Dateline Dec.1st:

The parking lots are full from all the tailgaters for today's games! The FCRHL playoffs begin today and you can feel the excitement in the air. The Predators arrived in town late last night under cover of darkness and in step with their name, we have still failed to locate them. It's like they have their own homes to sleep in! One thing you can be sure of is that this high powered team will be ready to roll ... er roller. Rumors of one of their players being sick has filtered into the stands but we've been unable to verify these rumors and of course Coach Wolfe has offered no injury report once again.

A cold crisp December morning begins the epic battles known as the FCRHL playoff season! I'm grabbin another hot chocolate and securing my seat for this one baby!
