Lehigh Valley box team looking for a few more players for tournament team.
The Lehigh Valley is entering a team into the US National Box Lacrosse Championships in Laurel, MD on August 21-23. We are still looking for another 5-10 players and a goalie. I have played box for about 5 years, and I've been teaching the guys in The Valley the box game. If you're interested in joining our team, email schades13@yahoo.com. We want to have a couple of practices before the tournament, so I'd like to finalize a roster within the next two or three weeks. posted by schades13@yahoo.com

This is a message for Joe Caulfield of the Beerwolves:
Hey guys,
I'm writing to you all to see if anyone is interested in giving hurling a shot. If you don't know what it is, here is a decent youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AM-kB1e96CA
It's a native Irish sport. It's the hardest sport I've ever played from a skills and a fitness perspective. There are a lot of similarities to lacrosse. I play for the Philadelphia Shamrocks (http://www.philadelphiashamrocks.com/). We have two teams, junior A and a junior C, all levels and skills get plenty of game time. It's a good mix of Irish guys and Americans. The age range goes from one 15 year old to a 52 year old. So it is a wide mix. The average age is mid-to-late 20's.
Practices are Tuesday and Thursday nights at 7:45 pm at Torresdale Boys Club (4500 Linden Ave, Philadelphia - just off the Academy Road exit - http://www.torresdaleboysclub.net/ - there were a few people that expressed interest last year, so I got the team to switch practices from Monday and Wednesday to Tuesday and Thursday in order to allow people to do both the PBLA and hurling practice). Practices are starting this Tuesday night officially. It's not SUPER serious, in that you won't be punished if you can't make practices. A lot of the early practices are geared towards learning the sport and skills. But as the games get more serious, playing time is decided by skill and commitment. It's been my experience that lacrosse players transition very well into hurling. You can usually tell in a game who's played lacrosse and who hasn't.
Our home game field is at Cardinal Dougherty High School (6301 N. 2nd Street, Phila., PA - http://www.cardinaldougherty.org/?pid=102). Games are usually on Sundays starting with our first one on May 21st. The season runs up until the last weekend in August or the first in September when we travel to the North American County Board Championships in Boston (NACB), which was is similar to lacrosse summer tournaments where you drink when you're not playing and with everyone up there being Irish you've never experienced anything like it...
Equipment is pretty basic. All newcomers should wear a helmet. Your lacrosse helmet is fine, which we all have already. I also wear a cup and shin pads to be safe. Dues are $75 for a regular member and $50 for students. The team would prefer you to buy your own hurl, which you can buy from the team. They run about $30 and unfortunately break kind of easily. I broke about three last summer. But you don't have to pay the money to play or buy a hurley right away. You can go to a few practices and try it out if you want. There are always a bunch of the club's hurls at practice for anyone to use.
Anyway, if you're interested, I recommend you give it a shot now and get out to a few of the early practices. The focus really is on fundamentals and learning the game. If you can't now time-wise, but want to come out later in the summer that works as well though. Keep in mind hurling is a dangerous sport, I don't think any more so than lacrosse. A lot of the early practices teach you about how to protect yourself along with the fundamental skills.
If you're interested, shoot me an email back (joelax@gmail.com) and let me know when you're going to get out. Just in case it rains or something I can let you know practice is canceled so you don't waste a trip.
