GOALIE LOOKING FOR A TEAM FOR THE SUMMER!
I am not really sure what division is best for me, but I am willing to try any. I've been playing since 1995 and have been on several competitive / travel teams, but I also took a few years off from hockey. I've practiced some with both of the women's teams here.
I will be working out of town from the 14th of May to the 9th of June but will be available the rest of the season and would really like to register with a team!
Please contact me if you're at all interested or want any more information! I am happy to come out to pick-up hockey to let you get an idea of how I play, just tell me when!

Just wanted to weigh in on the question of the new management for the OIC. As I understand it, the city is choosing between Rink Management Services Corporation and an affiliate of the San Jose Sharks. According to the city council's agenda, the current management, Iceoplex, is not in consideration going forward. Recently articles have been written discussing the Sharks' plan to dramatically increase our fees. I've actually looked into this pretty closely, and wanted to share what I've learned because it isn't necessarily what it seems.

If they win the contract, the Sharks (or whatever their affiliate is called) plan to enforce a team fee rather than individual fees of $7,900 per team
(http://clerkwebsvr1.oaklandnet.com/attachments/15267.pdf at page 2). At their other facilities, Logitech and Fremont, they offer a discount for paying on time, but the $7,900 team fee may reflect that. Assuming a 14 person team (14 players paying), that works out to $565, or $50 more than you paid this year. However, they also have a 24-game season, plus playoffs, rather than the 20 game season we have now. That means you pay $23.55 per game, rather than the $25.75 per game you pay now. So, with a 14 person team, you actually pay less per game under the Sharks than you pay now. If you have a 13 person team, you pay about $608 per person with the Sharks, or $25.33 per game -- still less than you do now per game.

The reason the Sharks' plan is seen as a "dramatic" increase in fees is because OIC teams now have an average of 10 paying players. Obviously, in that scenario you pay significantly more under the Sharks plan. However, it is worth pointing out that Iceoplex (current management) has required some teams (ordinarily new ones) to pay a team fee equivalent to 14 paying players if they didn't have 14. It seems that has been selectively enforced, but I know of at least two instances in which it has happened. In addition, players on teams with 10 or fewer players currently pay less for their ice time than teams with more players. That is worth thinking about.

This same analysis cannot be performed for Rink Management Services Corporation's proposal because they did not specify any team or individual rate they expect to charge for adult hockey. It is worth considering whether you really think they would allow teams with only 10 or fewer players to pay an individual rate of about $515. I suspect not, but I don't know.

I am not advocating that everyone support the Sharks taking over at OIC. I don't know if they would be better or worse than Rink Management Services Corp. or the current Iceoplex. I have heard the concern from youth hockey coaches that the Sharks could effectively monopolize youth hockey in the Bay Area. That seems to be a valid concern. But I think everyone should at least understand what the "fee increase" really is, rather than simply hearing that we would pay a lot more under the Sharks, which is not necessarily the case.

The next time the City Council will meet to try and sort this out is March 20.

Most importantly, let's hope the rink doesn't shut down while the city figures this all out. I suspect it won't, but I'm certainly a little worried.

Hi guys.....I'm dropping in the message board to pass along information on the pending OIC management change I heard at
the rink this morning.

The City of Oakland voted to a 4-4 tie this past Tuesday on who to award the OIC management contract to - ironic they could not chose a mgmt company to improve the OIC amateur ice hockey experience. Rumor has it that the final decision will now be made by the Mayor of Oakland. For those who feel
strongly about this mgmt change "event", I recommend you contact the Mayor's office to express your opinion.

The price increase is something to worry about as well as the future parking situation once the Fox Theater is reopened. I pay full rate (about $580 each) to play on
two teams, and with the $7990 team fee increase - it makes it hard to justify to the wife!

Hope this info is helpful to
all........good luck to all of us.
