Student volunteers will work as coaches in recreational settings for the E-Soccer program in Piedmont as well as at Together We Can, a free recreational program run by Oakland Unified in West Oakland. They will explore different approaches to working with children with a variety of needs, including learning how new and innovative technologies are being developed for use in these settings. Classroom and hands-on learning will include training to work with the participating players, developing communications skills and conflict resolution techniques. Facilitating the social, emotional and athletic development of the children on the field and playground will hone leadership, deepen awareness and empathy for AISCE students.

AISCE ("ace") is a service learning program for students entering 9th-12th grades which integrates the needs of the community with classroom exploration and reflection in three 3-week summer sessions.

Each session will offer 15 hours per week of combined class time and community service.

Community service will take place at several locations around the East Bay and will be an extension of the creative, engaging, hands-on curriculum designed for a small learning community led by dynamic Piedmont High School faculty.

Informal seminars led by PHS staff will provide oversight, mentoring and spirited inquiry in small group meetings. These sessions are geared to foster empathy, self-directed learning and critical thinking skills across disciplines as diverse as the social and physical sciences, nutrition, economics, civics, music, arts and literature. A collaborative 'reflection' project will be the culmination of students’ efforts.

Students who participate in this program will develop insight, character, leadership, and social skills while at the same time receiving training on how to work with children of diverse backgrounds with a variety of needs.

For students who wish to take Computer Skills and participate in AISCE, a flexible schedule can be arranged. Please contact AISCE director Ken Brown at kbrown@piedmont.k12.ca.us
