| Team Summaries | Tucson Xtreme Notes: THURSDAY NIGHT LACROSSE RIVALRY IN TUCSON On a clear but somewhat cool night at Golf Links Sports Complex, one of the newest sports rivalry’s in the Old Pueblo took another giant step forward. The emotions were obvious and could be seen on the faces of players, coaches, families and friends alike. Tonight’s game was to be the third between the combatants as the Tanque Verde Sabercat program only began last season. The Tucson Xtreme (formally known as the Tucson Gamecocks) took both previous match-ups last spring. In the early part of this season neither of the young local Lacrosse teams had been able to put a notch in their victory columns against the more experienced Phoenix area teams. So that’s the setup and now it was game time. No more talk. No more nothing but 48 minutes of the Creators Game. Hey Ref, blow the whistle and let’s play some ball. The drama continues through the first quarter. Tucson’s Frankie Armenta (1-0) scored the first goal of the game and Karl Dennis (1-0) tallied his first goal of the season giving the X-Men a 2-0 lead. Tanque Verde, obviously there to play, came back to knot the score at 2 with 1:05 left. The Sabercats got their goals on a wicked bounce shot by Tristan Spalla (2-0) and Billy Lloyd (2-0) tied the score only :33 seconds later to give the Sabercats the momentum. The 2nd quarter was a battle of the defenses and hard hitting. After 2:45 gone, X-Man, Matt Baum (3-2), the offensive star of the game put one past Ryan Pagliara (7 saves) for a 3-2 Xtreme advantage. After that score, neither side would bend as both teams fought valiantly for the City’s bragging rights. The action was so intense between the goal lines, each goalie was asked to make only one save in the period. After the intermission, play resumed like it had ended in the last quarter. Tucson however, scored a goal early and late in the stanza. Brian Fennie (2-0) contributed his first of the season on an assist from CJ Wysocki (0-1). With :56 left on the clock, Kevin Sanders (1-0) got his first for 2004 as the Xtreme took a 5-2 lead heading towards the final. As the crowd continued to cheer both teams on, the question remained whether the X-Men could hold off the Sabercats for 12 more minutes. 72 ticks of the clock into the final, Baum scored his second and the 6th of the game for Tucson. The Cats weren’t giving in as Spalla bounced another score past goalie Ben Kagen (16 saves) and the lead was 3. Baum was determined to finish this contest strong. He fed Fennie 35 seconds later and 1:10 after that help get Chris Maier (1-0) in the scorebook. The Sabercats last goal was scored by Lloyd on an assist from Scott Bruce and contributed to the 9-4 final. The Xtreme will enjoy the bragging right but not for too long.
