X-TRA, X-TRA READ ALL ABOUT IT!

The Tucson Xtreme added a “W” to their won-loss record on Saturday in Tucson. The X-Men defeated the Huskies from Horizon High School in Scottsdale, 14-6. The game was played at Emily Gray Middle School.

The game was terrific but the highlight of the day was the presence of Horizon Head Coach, Ray Pollard who has been out most of the season. Arizona players and coaches know that Coach Pollard had been held at gunpoint and unmercifully beaten and left for dead. I guess his assailants didn’t know that he had the heart and soul of a “Lacrosse Guy”. Great to see you in action Coach!

Huskies attackman, Dale Phan (5-0) who led all goal scorers, opened the scoring at 8:14 of the opening stanza. Both teams fought hard defensively creating many loose ball situations, lots of contact but only 3 shots on goal and the quarter ended with Horizon’s 1-0 lead.

Despite 2 more goals by Phan that was matched by X-Man Karl Dennis, the second quarter saw the home team get into a better flow while playing the best 3 quarters of their season. Although at the halftime break, the score was knotted at 4, the offensive action had improved. Huskies goalie, Ryan Rickard (16 saves) kept his team in the game with 6 saves during a Tucson offensive barrage that included 21 shots (10 on goal).

The 3rd quarter continued where it left off as The Xtreme came out fired up and dominated the action all over the field. During play, the ground ball production was 21-12, the defense stopped the opposition cold and the offense outscored the visitors 5-1. It all added up to a strong 9-5 lead. In fact, Horizon only scored twice in the second half and those goals came unassisted from Phan.

The final stanza was similar to the third. The Xtreme dominated all over the field with shots, ground balls and face-offs. Their aggressive play included another 5-1 goal differential and the 14-6 outcome.
