Another one goal classic in the always entertaining Mercer Island v Issaquah rivalry; the 4th in the last 4 years (teams have met 6 times in that span). This one included multiple controversies and huge momentum shifts for both sides before Issaquah escaped in OT.

Game started normal enough with both sides relatively patient on offense and both netminders showing why they are two of the top goalies in the state. Jordan Dondoyano (Issaquah) and Ezra Tillinger (Mercer) would both finsih the night with double digit saves.

Issaquah broke the ice as Ryan Egland found Max Dahlquist on the crease for the finish. First funky play came at the end of the 1st quarter as Issaquah finished a well executed endline play but it was ruled the ball had not crossed the plane of the goal line before the horn. The shot was released prior to the horn (good in college) but not across the line so Issaquah had to settle for 1-0 at end of the 1st.

Four minutes into the 2nd quarter Issaquah won a ball back on a ride and motioned to settle, but it duped the Mercer defense as Riley Richards found Cody Klansnic on the backside for multiple fakes and a finish.

Game remained very even though as keepers continued to make saves, but Mercer started to take the edge in time of possession. With just over 3 minutes left in the half Mercer went man-up. Issaquah killed the penalty but had trouble matching up and allowed Mercer to walk right to the doorstep and get one back before half.

The third quarter belonged to Jake Lindahl. First he put on the brakes, spun and ripped a righty shot low that found its way in with just under 7 minutes left in the quarter. A minute later, more controversy as an errant Issaquah pass appeared headed out of bounds. But a heads up play by defender Nate Holbrook to not give up on the play and he flicked it back in play. Lindahl won the gb and took advantage of the unsettled situation to race past a couple defenders and stick another one himself. James Rauch won the next faceoff and this time it was Ryan Egland's turn as he wrapped around from X to finish himself. Three goals in a span of just over 2 minutes and all the momentum was Issaquah's. Lindahl would complete his 3rd quarter hat-trick with just under 2 minutes left the quarter, dodging left and sticking another solo effort. Jonny Osman stopped the bleeding for Mercer sneaking one in from a low angle off a feed from Mitchell Mandt to close the quarter. 6-2 Issaquah into the 4th, but hold on... more controversy.

James Rauch was assessed a 3 minute stick penalty as the stick was ruled not legal for high school play - too narrow across the top - 3 minutes non-releasable. Cue momentum shift to Mercer.

Islanders took advantage right away and scored 20 seconds into the man-up. Rex Tamblyn won the next face-off though and Issaquah killed a large chunk of the penalty. In reality they could have killed it all but a poor pass/catch led to turnover and Mercer was able to get a second goal on the man-up. Back to even strength, but Mercer had Issaquah on their heels and maintained almost all the possession in the quarter - nearly 8 of the first 10 minutes in the quarter. Mercer scored again at the 7:30 mark followed by another at the 4:00 mark to tie it at 6-6. From the 9:00 mark til the 2:00 mark, Issaquah had the ball just twice and both times ended in saves from Tillinger after brief possessions.

With under two to play and the game tied, Mercer had the ball but shot wide and failed to back up the shot. Issaquah cleared and on the resulting possession, Lindahl drew a flag - man-up Issaquah with 1:10 to play. Issaquah shot just 15 seconds into the man-up and Tillinger made yet another save. Issaquah's ride won it back and Lindahl pushed to Wisler on the doorstep but Tillinger stuffed it again! One more time Issaquah won it back and this time it was Ryan Egland racing down the right side and unleashing a wild shot as he was being hit/pushed that somehow snuck under the pipe just over top the keeper's helmet. The crowd went nuts as Issaquah took the 7-6 lead with 30 seconds to play.

Rauch appeared to win the next faceoff but bobbled and Mercer came out with it. Rauch played great D though and forced Osman to cough it up. Rauch won the gb but Issaquah was called for interference behind the play. Mercer ball with 10 seconds left. They quickly pushed from X and remarkably Mandt (his 5th assist) found Johnny VanderVelden (his 4th goal)open on the crease - tie game with 5 seconds left - could it get any crazier?

Game went to OT and Rauch won the first faceoff but Egland's first shot was saved by Tillinger (his 12th). Again the Issaquah ride came up huge as Rex Tamblyn checked down the stick of a Mercer midfielder on the outlet pass giving Issaquah the ball back. After Holbrook cleared a quick timeout from Issaquah to discuss options. Issaquah spun the ball for 30 seconds before Lindahl attacked in almost identical fashion to his lefty drive in the third quarter - same result - he turned the corner and placed it neatly to give Issaquah their first win over Mercer Island since 2012!
