Team Summaries Overlake Notes:
Mt. Si and Overlake squared off Wednesday night on the Owls home field in Redmond on what turned out to be a very pleasant evening. This was a big Evergreen conference test for both teams who each started the game undefeated.

For most of the 1st quarter the teams struggled with turnovers and overall sloppy play probably due to some early “Big Game” jitters. Mt. Si would score first midway through the 1st quarter and Overlake’s sophomore attack sensation Colton Umberger would answer with less than 30 seconds left scoring 2 goals only 7 seconds apart. The Owls led 2-1 at the end of the 1st period.

Mt. Si had obviously decided that Overlake’s big attack line needed to be stopped if the Wildcats were going to be successful, and they largely accomplished that objective by holding junior attack Barrett Jenness and senior Frost Cunningham to only one goal between them. Mt. Si had crafted a quick slide package that would collapse on Overlake’s two wing attacks as soon as they started to dodge towards the goal. Additionally, they would slide a third defender from the crease area whenever the right handed Jenness started into his wing dodge sequence. Near perfect execution of this strategy had Overlake’s “Big Dogs” completely frustrated for the first two periods.

But as the saying goes “When one door closes, another one opens…” and this was true for Overlake. With Cunningham, Jenness and Junior Midfielder Eric Risa getting double teamed whenever they touched the ball, Umberger and junior midfielders Curtis Yokoyama and Kinori Rosnow stepped into the gaps. Overlake would tally three goals in the 2nd quarter and led the game 5-3 at halftime.

Head Coach Greg Butler and offensive coach Ian Kelly adjusted their offensive plan at halftime and the Owls came out fired up for the 2nd half of the game. Overlake ran off four unanswered goals in third period while holding Mt. Si scoreless and led 9-3 after three. Jenness and Cunningham mutated from finishers to feeders ending the game with 6 of the teams 10 assists. (91% team assist ratio!)

The Overlake fans might have begun to breathe a little easier when the Owls achieved a 6 goal lead. But if anybody thought the game was in hand, Mt. Si never got the memo. The gritty Wildcats found their 2nd wind and tallied 5 goals against Overlake’s 2 in the final period making the game feel much closer than the 11-8 final score would indicate.

Leading all scorers was Overlake’s Sophomore Colton Umberger who tallied 6 goals, while Kinori Rosnow scored another 3. Cunningham had 1 goal and 3 assists while Risa finished with one goal and 1 assist. Jenness and Yokoyama ended the game with 3 assists each.

The keys to this game were Overlake’s dominance at the face off X with Risa winning 75% of the draws and their offensive balance. Mt. Si executed a solid defensive game plan and goalkeeper Cameron Pike was brilliant between the pipes stopping 19 of 30 shots Overlake sent his way. But the Owls offensive “6-pack” showed again that stopping one, two or even three players is not going to be enough.

The Owl defense played to their usual high standards. Aside from a slight let down in the 4th period, the very experienced Owl long poles and D-middies frustrated the Wildcats all game and dominated the ground war winning 62% of the ground balls.

Mt Si is making a clear statement this year that they have arrived as a legitimate playoff contender. ANY team in the league that chooses to overlook the speed, talent and tenacity of this Wildcat team may well end up on the wrong end of their contest.
