Issaquah 2-3-3-1- 9

This had to be the best high school sporting event taking place in Washington on this Tuesday night. About as even of a game as you could get until Issaquah killed some man-down situations in the 4th and made a huge play off a scramble to push to the decisive 2 goal final margin.

Duncan Hamilton got the scoring started for Issaquah 2 minutes in on a simple bounce shot from an alley dodge. Mercer responded 30 seconds later as Alex Robbs ripped a 12 yarder after some quick ball movement. Alex Cizsewski scored his first of the night on a feed from Hamilton off a broken play to put Issaquah back up. Game stayed 2-1 for nearly the rest of the quarter until Mercer gained possession with under a minute left off a failed Issaquah clear. Islanders captialized as Mikey Schwartz found a cutting Conor Bernal who dipped around a screen and finished neatly. 2-2 at the end of the 1st.

Mercer took its first and only lead of the night early in the 2nd on another goal from Robbs. Ben Director responded with a solo effort for Issaquah less than 2 minutes later. Another goal from Hamilton and a well executed play from Julian Ritchie to Cizsewski put Issaquah up two with less than 4 min in the half. But again, Mercer bounced right back as on the ensuing faceoff Conway hit Chase York streaking right down the middle and the long pole finished. Hayden Reisman snuck a high hard bounce shot by O'Neil Hughes to tie it up with 2 minutes in the half and it remained that way headed to the break.

Early in the third Issaquah junior defenseman, Eric Rauch made a ridiculous athletic play seemingly caught up in a clear he ran his way out of trouble broke across the midline and ripped a shot himself for the first goal of his career! Issaquah won the next faceoff and Direcotr scored his second giving Issaquah a rush of momentum. We all know too well though just how reilient Mercer is and it showed. Agin they bounced right back with 2 goals inside a minute of each other and the game was deadlocked at 7-7 with 7 minutes to play in the quarter. It would be the last time Mercer would find the net though. Issaquah broke the deadlock late in the third capitalizing on a man-up chance. Mercer knew it was coming but Hamilton made a nifty skip pass that Matt O'Neill handled and finsihed on the back pipe.

Led by a superior performance from Austin Richert, the Issaquah defense stood tall in the 4th quarter killing a couple more man-down situations. Offensively Issaquah was getting long possessions but wasn't getting much out of them. Seemed destined for Mercer to knot it up again when they went man up with under 3 min to play but Issaquah was able to force it to the ground and a mad scramble ensued as the ball got kicked and flipped all the way down the field and ended with Director picking it up and finding himself with just the keeper to beat. He finished with 2:15 on the clock to put Issaquah up two. Mercer quickly earned another man-up chance but Issaquah stood tall again, clearing and forcing Mercer offside with just over a minute left. Issaquah was able to run out the clock and defeat the Islanders for the first time since 2009.

Great defensive game for unit of Richert, Rauch, Lindor (9 groundballs and helping keep Bernal in check), Undi, Webb, Thomas and Eaton. Josh Smith also did well coming in to break up the early Mercer dominance of the faceoffs.
