Team Summaries | Wenatchee Notes: The afternoon of February 17, 2010 was no different than any other February day when Port Angeles Lacrosse player Nick Wright, a junior, set out on a jog with a buddy as they conditioned themselves for the upcoming season. Nick was a member or the Olympic Mountaineers Lacrosse Club, a newly formed team within the WHSBLA after funding for the Port Angeles High School Lacrosse team had been cancelled at the end of the 2009 season. But what started as a simple run in anticipation of the upcoming season turned to tragedy when Nick collapsed and died as the result of an un-diagnosed heart condition. He was seventeen. By all reports this young man was in the simplest of descriptions “an awesome guy”. Beginning a season with the loss of a teammate must have been excruciating to the newly formed club who not only dedicated the entire season to Nick’s memory, but made the most of it by performing at a level unexpected in their quest to make a statement within their division. With both passion and perseverance the Olympic Mountaineers successfully made it to the State playoffs in a competitive division. It was with the jersey of number 14 proudly displayed on the sidelines that this fine group of young men and two very competent young ladies met on the pitch at Wenatchee Valley College to attempt to continue their quest for a shot at the State Championship against the Wenatchee Valley Lacrosse Boys High School Team in the first round of the State playoffs. With the temperature hovering around 80 degrees the first ten minutes of the match was well contested by both sides, but the skills of the Wenatchee side quickly turned the tide and in the end it was a thorough defeat of the Olympic Mountaineers as they were out-played in all facets of the game resulting in Wenatchee being up 17-2 at the final whistle. What should be remembered about this game is not the score or the skills of the players, but rather the fact that this was the finest example of sportsmanship, by both teams, seen in a match in which Wenatchee Valley Lacrosse has been a participant. The combined total of the penalty minutes was three and a half, a number rarely obtained. It was a clean game of Lacrosse played at purest of levels by both teams, each of whom showed the greatest respect for the game witnessed to date. Congratulations to the Olympic Mountaineers on their fine season and congratulations to Wenatchee Valley in their win. For all who participated this was a proud moment, one you should look to in all your future endeavors. . You have all honored the game and most importantly the spirit of Nick Wright in a very fine manner. Well done. Port Angeles Notes: |
