Team Summaries Mariners Notes:
This was a tale of three games.... With Will making his first start of the season, the Astros made an early statement by scoring two runs in the 1st, interspersed amongst the 3 Ks Will rang up. In contrast, the Mariners went quietly in the first two innings, with only one hit by our entire line-up. Will, felt stingy after the 1st inning, and proceeded to mow down the Astros during the next 4 1/3 innings. totaling 9 Ks. The Mariners did grind out a run in the 3rd as Luke led off with a walk, stole 2nd, and moved over to third on base hit by Alex. The Astros’ pitching was still masterful as they stymied our heart of the order, and it took an error on a pop-up before we even scored one run. The Astros were like the rebels in Star Wars, who used the force to their advantage to keep the evil empire at bay, and had a 2 to 1 lead after three.

Chapter two was like the Empire Strikes Back as the Mariners in the 5th inning stormed trooped their way to six runs. Luke again got it started with a 1B and stolen base. Alex followed with a walk, and Will promptly hit a double up the middle. Greg had a hit of his own to drive in another. Jesse did his part with a hit to the opposite side, as did Xhjyl. Karsten then had his own clutch 2 out hit to drive in Xhjyl. The fun stopped though as Luke had his second hit of the inning, a double that was too tempting to NOT send Karsten home from 1B, who was thrown out on a bang bang play at the plate. Still, great theater as the rebellion seemed to be quelled.

Unfortunately, if the Mariners were the Empire, then Star Wars fans know that in the last chapter, the Empire gets defeated at the end by some feisty heroics. Although the Mariners squeezed out one more insurance run on a triple by Will, mixed in with a scramble to the plate on an off-relay throw, to make it 8 to 3 going into the last inning, those feisty heroics came not in the form of Luke Skywalker or Han Solo, but instead, it was five walks and a couple of defensive miscues that allowed the Astros to fire that dreaded photon torpedo down the hatchway of our Death Star.

Now, you’ll have to forgive me if I’m portraying our team as the evil Empire. Rather, I think it’s fitting only to the extent the Mariners felt like the dark side was consuming them after this very tough loss. For some reason, I didn’t have the same dread as I felt a little like Yoda, where I have visions of a promising future for the Ms. I mean, it took Anakin Skywalker six movies and three decades before he found his redemption by defeating the Emperor. Similarly, if the Mariners can just take this as another lesson, and remember that the playoffs are truly a second season and just around the corner, it will be our turn to use the force and win the day....
