Team Summaries Mariners Notes:
Some may dispute my contention that this was the best played game of the season for the Mariners, especially since this one didn’t come with a notch in the win column, but you had to be there as this one had it all. It had great defense as Sam showed some quick glove work on a FC, and then followed it up by spearing a liner for a 4-3 DP, keeping the damage to Aaron’s ERA to just two runs. This game then had offense by the Mariners’ developing heart of the order as a lead-off walk by Luke, plus consecutive hits by Alex, Will and Greg (2B) helped tie the game at two.

Aaron then made quick work of the Padres in the 2nd, aided greatly by a strike from Karsten to 3B. Unfortunately, the M’s couldn’t capitalize as the Padres returned the favor.

In the 3rd, Alex took the mound and gave up a lead-off single. But on a quick move to 1B, it was enough to catch the runner stealing 2B. Still, the pesky Padres willed their way onto the bases with a infield hit, and a subsequent balk was enough to let them take a one run lead. But the damage could have been more but for a clutch K by Alex to end the threat. Alex took matters into his own hands in the bottom half by drawing a walk and stealing his way into scoring position. Aaron then had a clutch hit to tie the game once more.

Alex then wrapped up the top of the 4th with big help from the defense, particularly a gutsy throw from Luke to generate the inning ended run-down. Karsten tried to take that momentum and punched a hit into LF, but even a SB couldn’t inspire the rest of the offense.

Then in the 5th, it was Will’s turn to throw the leather, even as we continue to work Will in as if this was spring training. The Padres were tough against Will as they got a couple of hits off of his blazing fastball to get the go-ahead run. Still, even rusty Will got a couple of impressive Ks that left Luke’s mitt with some indentations. In the Mariners’ turn at-bat, Alex was clutch again with his 3rd hit and two steals, which was enough to rattle the pitcher to balk in the tying run, making it 4 to 4.

The 6th was a trade-off of great pitching by both sides as Will continued to improve his K/ball ratio with every batter. But a lead-off hit by the Padres did set up a scoring opportunity as Sam once again, saved us by sprinting out to short RF to snag a for-sure RBI. In our half, Christian put in the only scare of the inning with a decently hit fly-ball to left that just hung in the Willard air to be caught.

Then the top of the seventh came, and the Padres again got a lead-off hit. After a FC, a hard shot that left a bruise on Jesse at 1B, set up a close play as Trey charged in to snag it and threw home, which was just a tad late. Solid play by the Mariners’ IF defense then closed the door on any more runs, but down 5 to 4, how would the Ms play this hand?

Apparently with a lot of heart and hustle as Trey’s determination earned him 1B on a dropped third. Alex then finished up a 3 for 3 day to set up 1st and 2nd with no outs. But alas, it wasn’t to be on this day as we huffed, and we puffed, but failed to blow the house down . Nevertheless, as stated at the beginning, this was in my humble opinion, the best game played by the Mariners, who are all finally healthy (including the coach’s eye), and hopefully soon to be a force to be reckoned with. Believe it.... I do.
