Team Summaries Mariners Notes:
On a lava-like day at Piedmont, 9 Mariners took the field against the undefeated Pelicans. It took extra innings to decide this one, although the Mariners had the game in their grasp as it was 11 to 11 going into the bottom of the seventh, when Christian blasted a stand-up triple to deep left-center. In a bang-bang play, hats off then went to the Pelicans' pitcher who had enough presence of mind to take a come-backer to the pitcher, turn to throw to 1B, then whirl again to flip it home to nail Christian at the plate. But it still wasn't over as Aaron and Trey earned walks and moved over to 2nd and 3rd on steals. With one out, good shots by Xhjyl and Sam were then snagged by a shallow OF to take us to the 8th, where we just ran out of gas, and Pels kept a little extra to burst through 6 runs, while we only answered with one more.

Some may look at this game as one of lost opportunity, but those naysayers forget that Pels pounded out 17 hits to our 8, 2 coming from bunts. Indeed, this was a game that the short-handed Mariners almost stole as Aaron pitched like a crafty vet, scattering 6 runs on 2 Ks, in 4 innings of work. Then, it was Luke who pitched in his first Juniors game, who looked nasty as his struck out the side in his first inning of work. Even against the Pels' murderer's row that they tried to hide in the bottom of the order, Luke handled them in the top of the 6th to give us that game-winning opportunity.

But the team of Aaron/Luke was not alone as they had lots of help from other Ms to put us in that spot. Sam gets the heads-up award for covering 1B on a IF pop-up to get us the inning ending DP in the 2nd. Greg and Xhjyl were lights out with fly-balls on this steamy afternoon. Greg also had a couple of hits, including the 8th inning last gasp double. Alex got a IF hit and stole his usual share of bases when he wanted. Karsten had a clutch 2 out hit in te 6th to put us up, and was also tough behind the plate for a couple of innings, and even pitched in his first game in relief of Luke. Trey got on 3 times with walks, stealing a base and scoring along the way. Xhjyl looked like he was out of his early season slump as he bunted in a run and hit the near-game winner.

Although losses like these can be tough, the Ms should be proud of the way they played tough throughout, never giving up. With honorary base coach Jesse W. helping to egg on the runners, fate was almost on our side. Rest up Ms... with only 8 players tomorrow, we'll really have an opportunity to show how tough we are...

Pelicans Notes:
On a beautiful hot hot afternoon, the Pels and Mariners combined for 8 innings and 29 runs, and what we all know after three games is that when the Pelicans take the field, you need to take the Vegas OVER line (Note: Pelicans Management and the NOLL/SOLL board do not condone gambling on Little League baseball / Pelicans Legal Dept).

The Pels got 2 innings each from Dallas, Christmas, Chester and JP and each of them outdid the last in terms of guts and perseverance. By virtue of going last, JP's innings were the most spectacular. With the score tied in the bottom of the 7th, he took the mound for the first time in 2 years and quickly jumped out to an 0-2 advantage before ChristianCB pounded out a leadoff triple. But JP coaxed a comebacker and erased the runner at the plate and went on to earn 6 fabulous outs.

Altho the Pels arms were clutch and their bats were loud (Mumbles with 2 triples and 8 RBI; Strawberry, Lightning and FishStick each on base 4 times and each scoring or driving in 4 runs), it was the defense that won this game. In the 4th, Chester made a phenomenal diving catch of a sure texas-leaguer in left. Two batters later, FishStick snagged a grounder at short, tagged a runner and got the force at 2nd. In the 5th Chester (now on the mound) sniffed out a 2-strike suicide and pitched wide to Mumbles for an inning-ending K-2U double play. In the 6th, Dallas fired home to catch a Mariner trying to steal a run on the back end of a grounder. And in the 7th there was JP's game-saving play at home...

Get Well Mariners, the Pels are looking forward to the rematch!
