The Mercury won their first game beating the so-far undefeated Terry Pratt, DDS Hot Tamales in a very tight game. With one player short for the rest of the season, the Mercury played their hearts out. Strong and aggressive rebounding from Haregua Gebreyesus (12 rebounds) and Christine P. Nguyen (eight rebounds and two points), kept the Hot Tamales scrambling throughout the game. Kelly Hosokawa played aggressively, getting two key offensive rebounds while Alexa Le scored four points. Jessica deMesa was excellent defensively, and orchestrated her teammates by dishing out eight assists, swiping 12 steals and contributing 12 points. Although Christine Nguyen fouled out, she was simply perfect; making all her six shots and was the high scorer with 13 points for Team Mercury. After a slow start, the Hot Tamales went on a second half run but were unable to pull out a win in the last seconds. Elizabeth Adkins lead the team with 16 points, four rebounds and two steals. Adding to the second half surge were Daija Stafford with five points, 10 rebounds and a steal and Rose LaSalle-Klein with two points and eight rebounds. |
