Well, if you were home studying for the WASL you sure missed a good one! What a way to get the season rolling as this one had a little of everything.

Both defenses showed their clout in the first half. Mercer had the better of possession and Greg Mahony netted two. 2-1 at halftime. Mahony would net two more in the 3rd to push Mercer to 4-1. Alex Bates scored man-up to pull Issaquah back headed to the 4th.

Travis Wright scored unassisted to make it 4-3 early in the 4th. Teams traded possessions for a few minutes. Then a near Issaquah goal turned into a scramble at the midfield that Mercer won and turned into an Ian Kaminski goal. But, David Campi came right back a minute later to tally unassited and keep Issaquah one back.

The next five minutes was as intense as could be. Both keepers made huge saves to keep the score 5-4. Issaquah had the ball with under a minute, put pressure on the net and drew a flag with 13 seconds on the clock. Issaquah called timeout and drew up a play. A Travis Wright shot hit the keeper square in the facemask and caromed to the endline. Campi won the race and one last possession for Issaquah. Campi drove the right pipe and Cale Frye slipped down the slot to catch and finish with 3 seconds left!!!

In celebration, Issaquah players left the bench to mob Frye and was called for unsportsmanlike. So, Mercer started overtime man-up with the ball. Mercer got a great look and Matt Wright's shot hit both pipes and the keeper's back before nearly missing. A scrum ensued and Mike Gerrard won the ball, beat two guys and made a remarkable clearing pass to Brendon Frye on the farside. Issaquah was able to kill the remainder of the penalty and call timeout.

Issaquah maintained possession for about 20 seconds. The ball moved to Alex Bates. Bates was pressured, ran by his defender and finished...game over!

Issaquah played an incredible defensive game. Mike Gerrard held Kevin Mahony to 1 assist, while Garrett Johnson made 13 saves. Issaquah just kept fighting...in the end they found enough offesne to get it done. Absolutely amazing way to start the season!
