Team Summaries Mariners Notes:
In the Ms first game of the season against a NOLL team, the first place A's took it to us quickly in the first inning, scoring 5 runs and batting through the order. Christian didn't have his best stuff, and it looked the major league A's were at Caldecott instead of the Juniors version as there were multiple hot shots and blasts to the gaps. But Christian showed his grit as he settled down and only gave up two more through four innings. In the meantime, the Mariners had nothing to show on the scoreboard in the first two innings. But it wasn't for lack of effort as Sam sacrificed Luke and Greg over to set up 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs in the 1st. However, Aaron hit a bullet that was snared by a stretched out SS to quash that rally. Sam was a one-man defensive machine in the 2nd as he helped Christian regain his composure with a nice grab of a flare to RF, and an even better pick up of a short hop and fire to 1B. Things looked ominous in the top of the 3rd when the A's struck again for a run, and threatened with 1st and 3rd with one out. Fortunately for us, a pop-out on a steal attempt allowed Greg at 1B to make the unassisted DP. In the bottom half of the 3rd, Thomas had a great at-bat as he battled until he hit a shot up the middle that was stopped by the quick glove of the pitcher. Still, it seemed to inspire Alex and Luke as they then had back to back hits. Greg then picked up a RBI with a double to the gap. Sam hit a FC that knocked in another, and Aaron and Christian also hit back to back singles to make it a 6 to 3 game. But while we hustled our way back into the game, could we hold back the A's, especially since their baserunners were stealing bases like it was going out of style? I guess Luke had seen enough as he gunned out an As at 1B who dove back too late in the 4th. That kept the damage to just one run for the A's in that inning. Luke did it again in the 5th, this time on an A's player who got back a bit too casually for the blue. Luke then finished off another hat trick in guns from catcher in the 6th as he fired to Karsten at 2B to nail the would-be base robber. Meanwhile, Alex had come in to relieve Christian, finishing with 4 Ks in 3 innings of work. Unfortunately, a couple of walks in the 7th allowed the A's to bring in some insurance runs. The Mariners did not go quietly though. Trey had his breakout game of the season as he went 2 for 3, including a smash that ate up the SS in the 4th. With Xhjyl also breaking out of his slump with a single to move Trey to 3B, Trey eventually scored on a close DP that ended a potentially big inning. Tough trade-off for one run. In the last inning, the Mariners had the makings of one last hurrah as Alex got it started with a triple to finish off a nice 3 for 4 day. Luke also completed a 4 for 4 day with a base knock and ribbie. So, when Greg hustled his way on an error, things looked promising. But the planets were not aligned properly for the Mariners on this day as a K and a flyball on a steal attempt, led to an game-ending DP. The loss was actually secondary as Trey sprained his knee on a hard slide at 2nd after his second hit, and may be out for while, leaving the short-handed Mariners precariously close to no-man's land as we only had eight ready for Sunday. Can we pull a rabbit out of our hat? Stay tuned sports fans....
