D'BAX FALL TO PELICANS IN EXTRA-INNING THRILLER

The D’Bax jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after Alejandro (Rope*) started a 2-out rally in the bottom of the 1st inning. Key hits by Eric (Twinkle Toe*) and Eivind (Clutch*) capped the rally. The D’Bax added another run in the 2nd when Joey (Deuce*) scored on Rope’s single, making it 4-1.

Luke (Ace*) pitched two solid innings to start the game before an injury to his throwing arm sidelined him for the evening. We hope its nothing serious and that he won't be sidelined for long.

The talented Pelicans rallied for 3 runs in the top half of the 3rd, but the D’Bax answered by scoring 2 runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. One coming off an RBI single by Robert (Contact*). The D’Bax held a 7-5 lead heading into the top of the 7th, when the Pelicans scored 4 runs and claimed a 2-run lead. Clutch came in to closeout the inning and game for the D’Bax after Rope reached the max pitch count. Clutch showed great poise pitching in relief in a 7th inning jam.

The D’Bax refused to go quietly, with an exciting rally of their own in the bottom of the 7th; tying the game and forcing extra innings. Clutch began the 2-run rally by battling for a leadoff walk. Danny (Big Time*) had the big hit of the rally with a 2-out triple to deep left center field. The Pelicans scored 2 more runs in the top half of the 8th. This time, the D’Bax couldn’t muster a rally; the final score being 11-9.

The game saw several momentum changes; Sunday prime time baseball at its finest. The rematch between these two teams could be another doozy. Let’s hope the weather cooperates with temps well above the 50 degrees at which the game closed.

While the game will go in the ‘L’ column for the D’Bax, there was certainly no loser in this hard-fought contest. One team BEAT another. GREAT game Pels & D’Bax!!!

Pelicans Notes:
Wow.
I mean really wow! Game 2 of the season was a barn-burner.

Pels 0 1 3 0 1 0 4 2 = 11
DBacks 3 1 1 2 0 0 2 0 = 9

The Pels gave up a prime scoring opportunity in the top of the first, succumbing to a tragic and possibly never-seen-before inning-ending K-2-3-2 DP; the DBacks made the lost run sting by opening up a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the frame on the strength of EricH's 2-out 2-run blast to the unlit corner of Willard. Talk on the Pelicans' bench was that it was a good thing he had to stop at home, or he might have gone back around to 2nd base again. It looked at that point that the DBacks had more interest in the game, but it would turn out that the 3 run lead was as large an advantage as either team would enjoy.

In the second, the Pels turned a leadoff triple into a run on Apple's sacrifice grounder, but the DBacks reclaimed their 3 run advantage in the bottom half, scoring to make the score 4-1.

In the top of the third, the Pels had a little 2-out magic of their own, turning extra base hits by FishStick and Mumbles into a 4-4 tie. DBacks starter LukeP tweaked his arm and had to come off the mound, and eventually out of the game. Unfazed, the DBacks answered in the bottom of the fourth, claiming their third 3-run lead of the game at 7-4.

The Pels closed again in the top of the fifth on Lightning's 3rd hit of the night, and held serve for the first time as FishStick set the Snakes down 1-2-3 on just 10 pitches. The DBack lead was 7-5.

When the 7th inning rolled around, the Pels were still down 7-5, but had the heart of their order looking to cause some damage. FishStick singled, and moved to third on a throwing error. Strawberry brought him home with a double to right. Evan walked and Lightning's single sent the tying run scampering home. An out later, Chester knocked a double to right center plating the go-ahead runs and giving the Pels their first lead of the long, cold night.

Strawberry re-took the mound in the bottom of the 7th with a 2 run lead. A walk and 2 strikeouts later, DannyE smoked a triple to bring the DBacks within one. Strawberry induced a potential game-ending grounder, but a bobble tied the score at 9s and left runners at the corners. A semi-intentional walk later and the Pels and Diamondbacks were at the climax of every Hollywood baseball script. Bottom of the 7th, 2 outs, bases loaded with a power pitcher vs a power hitter. Strawberry quickly jumped ahead 0-2, and then after a couple careful pitches, got the K to preserve the tie.

On to extra innings, with parents and fans concerned about frostbite, umpires and coaches worried about curfews on a school night, and the players simply excited about free baseball. As tightly as the game had been played, there was a real possibility that this game would be suspended as a tie, to be thawed out and completed sometime in May.

The Pels ended that speculation by retaking the lead for good. Lightning's 5th hit of the night, a double to the RF wall, plated two (his 4t and 5th RBIs). Strawberry demanded the ball and used just 9 pitches close the game out.

Here's hoping that everyone heals up over the week off, and good luck to both teams next weekend!
