Bats Notes: No notesRailriders Notes: Skip called a good technical game today - his balls and strikes were good and timing was mostly good (a little fast on one called pitch but other than that he was good).
Skip's game management was atrocious. He took charge of evaluating a kid's injury after he got hit by a pitch, rather than letting team personnel do that. He followed a kid into his dugout to give him a lengthy lecture on not throwing the bat. He gave a batter a lengthy lecture on getting out of the way when a play at the plate is imminent. He gave one of my pitchers a lengthy lecture about quick pitching.. here is an excerpt of that last one:
Skip (to pitcher with me present): When are ready to pitch, don't just throw it right away. You have to take a pause in your motion to make sure that I am ready. Me: Okay, that's fine. But if you are not ready, won't you just put your hand up to keep the pitcher from pitching. Skip: No, I'm always ready.
I agree that the pitcher should be aware of the batter and not pitch when the batter is not ready in the box. However, it's the umpire's job to manage that, not the pitcher's. Skip clearly still needs to learn that.
Jed Volpe was fine on the bases. He was set for all his calls. Calls need to be much louder and more emphatic, especially on close plays, but that will come with experience. |
