Team Summaries Express Notes:
After falling behind early to the host Lake Monsters Sunday, the Express clamped down on defense and clawed their way back to within three runs but could not finish the comeback, falling 12-9 at Golden Gate Academy.

The game started auspiciously for the Diesels as they jumped out to a three-run lead in the top of the first behind a walk to Aidan D and hits by Sommers D-N, Ari F, and Cole E.

In the bottom of the frame, though, the Lake Monsters struck back, plating five behind several well hit balls. It was more of the same in the bottom of the second, as the Champs' lead-off hitter launched a rocket down the right-field line, sparking another five run inning.

'I thought both Ari and Sommers pitched well,' said Coach Brook after the game. 'When you throw strikes, sometimes the other guys are going to hit, and that's what happened today. Give them credit for hitting the ball hard.'

Down 10-4 going into the top of the third, the Locomotives did not give up, scoring two runs on a bases-loaded grounder to SS by Liam D that took a funny bounce, allowing two to score.

In the bottom of the third, Aidan D came in to pitch for the Express and effectively shut down the Lake Monsters over two frames, giving up just one run and notching two strike outs. Aidan was helped by some heads-up plays in the field. First baseman John S got the first out of the third, smartly going to second base to get the force out on a grounder that pulled him well off the bag toward second. Kiran K made an unassisted put-out at second on a ground ball for the second out in the frame. And Aidan helped his own cause, throwing home to C Liam D to get the third out of the third. In the fourth, second baseman Jonah L nabbed a liner to end the inning.

The Express added another two runs in the fourth -- behind hits by Aidan, Ari, and Jonah -- and another run in the fifth, to pull within two.

In the bottom of the fifth, Liam D came out of the pen and held the Lake Monsters to a run, striking out three to send the Freight Trains to the top of the sixth, trailing by just three.

The Express could not complete the comeback, however. After the Lake Monsters' closer sandwiched a hit-by-pitch between two strike-outs, the game ended on a nice play at third on a liner by Liam D.

'This team never gives up - that's what I love about them,' said Coach Brook. 'Coming off a week with no practice, missing three players, and down big after two innings, some teams might have given up, but not our guys - very proud of them. Now, we're on to the Dragons next Sunday.'
